Warm Lighting Basics
Color Temperature Scale
Consider the color temperature and CRI of the light source when choosing LED lighting for an interior space. The color temperature should be chosen to match the desired ambiance of the space. For example, a warm light temperature is often used in bedrooms and living rooms where softer ambient lighting is desired and the mood is calm. Cooler light temperature is often used in kitchens and offices where task lighting is more essential. Cooler temperatures are also beneficial where accurate color representation is needed.
Warm Colors in the Evening
When you consider that before electricity, our primary light source in the evenings was the warm glow of fire, it's not all that surprising that we seek out warm colors after dark. These are the ambient tones we embrace during relaxation, which help us ease the transition between activity and sleep. Warm tones aren't just the result of an incandescent bulb's color temperature. Smart LED lights and warm-toned shades can also warm and soften a light to better resonate with our circadian rhythms.
How Color Tone Changes Our Perception
If you've ever spent time in chilly fluorescent light, then stepped out into a sunny day, you've seen firsthand how the temperature of a light can affect both color and mood. Warm light can draw out the rich tones of gold and brown furnishings far more effectively than cool colors. As previously mentioned, these tones are associated with nighttime and rest. If hard work and focus is required, cool tones are the way to go.
Where Should Warm Lights Be Placed?
As warmer tones inspire comfort and serenity, they're most appropriate for bedrooms and living spaces, while utility and task-focused spaces are more functional with cool light. However, most spaces benefit from a mix of both warm and cool light. Some LED luminaires and smart bulbs can transition between both options, while a range of warm ambient fixtures and cooler task lights can let a space fill whatever role you need, when you need it.
