Light Like Nature

Understanding Human Centric Lighting

At Lighting New York, we understand the importance of natural light. Sunlight nourishes our bodies with vitamin D, boosts energy levels, and even regulates sleep. But for many of us, natural light exposure is limited by our daily routines.

That's where Human Centric Lighting (HCL) comes in. HCL is a revolutionary lighting system that mimics the natural light cycle indoors. Imagine office lights that gradually brighten and cool in the morning, mimicking sunrise, and then transition to warm, calming tones in the evening, just like sunset.

HCL isn't just about mimicking nature, it's about supporting your health and well-being. Here's a closer look at HCL and its benefits:

  • Enhanced Productivity: Studies show HCL can improve alertness and focus, leading to better work performance.
  • Improved Sleep: HCL can regulate melatonin production, helping you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly.
  • Elevated Mood: HCL may help combat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and improve overall mood.

The Lighting New York Pro Program is here to help you explore the potential of HCL in your space. With HCL, you can create an environment that works in harmony with your natural rhythms and improves your overall health and happiness.

What is Human Centric Lighting?

HCL, also known as circadian lighting, uses tunable LED fixtures to mimic the natural world's light cycle. These fixtures can adjust color temperature and intensity throughout the day, promoting alertness in the morning and relaxation at night.

How Does HCL Work?

HCL relies on tunable LED lights. Unlike traditional lighting, these LEDs can change color temperature, measured in Kelvins (K). For instance, a bright, energizing white light might have a color temperature of 6,500 K, while a warm, relaxing light might be around 2,700 K. HCL systems adjust the color temperature throughout the day, mimicking the natural progression of sunlight.

What is a Circadian Rhythm?

Our circadian rhythm is our internal 24-hour clock. This cycle is influenced by light exposure and regulates various bodily functions, including sleep and wakefulness. Exposure to bright light in the morning helps regulate our circadian rhythm, promoting alertness throughout the day.

Benefits of Human Centric Lighting

Studies have shown that HCL can provide a variety of benefits:

  • Increased Productivity: Research suggests that HCL can improve alertness, focus, and overall well-being in office workers.
  • Improved Sleep Quality: Exposure to bright light in the morning and dimmer light in the evening can regulate melatonin production and improve sleep quality.
  • Enhanced Mood: HCL may help alleviate symptoms of SAD and improve mood throughout the year.
