Dark Sky Lighting Guide

What is Dark Sky lighting and why is it important?

Dark Sky lighting is designed to direct light to the ground rather than up into the sky. This helps reduce light pollution while also minimizing disruptive glare and excess light.

With many communities instating dark sky ordinances to help combat the negative effects of outdoor lighting at night, here’s a quick guide of simple lighting changes you can implement on your own property to stay in compliance. Protect the environment and conserve energy while creating subtle, eye-pleasing illumination around your home for years to come.

Dark Sky Lighting Tips:

  1. Consider using motion sensor outdoor lights that only illuminate when you need them.

  2. Less is more. Reduce the wattage on your outdoor bulbs. (Ex. 100 watts to 50 watts)

  3. Select fixtures for driveway areas, walkways, gardens, etc. that direct all light to the ground.

  4. Avoid uplighting to protect visibility of the night sky.

  5. Be considerate of your neighbors. Avoid light trespass and blinding glare that spills into neighboring properties.

  6. Use the most efficient lamp suitable for your space.
